Draft Final Proposal of the International Charter of ICOMOS about Cultural Heritage Tourism

Abstract

Due to the growth, alteration and interruption of global tourism, it was necessary to revise the ICOMOS International Cultural Tourism Charter of 1999, which gave rise to the ICOMOS International Charter on Cultural Heritage Tourism (2021) which aims to reinforce the protection of cultural heritage and the resilience of communities through responsible and sustainable management of tourism. This as a result of concern about the degradation of cultural heritage and the social, ethical, cultural, environmental and economic rights issues associated with tourism.

The International Charter proposes that it contribute to the preservation of cultural heritage, the empowerment of communities, resilience and social well-being, and a healthy global environment. In addition, it establishes that responsible tourism must promote and create awareness of cultural heritage, as well as provide well-being and personal and collective resilience that promote respect for the diversity of other cultures.
