Sculpture Show ICOM 2022

Abstract

Helena González presents the exhibition entitled “Rostros y Retratos: Expresiones en Volumen” (Faces and Portraits: Expressions in Volume) at the Diego Rivera Mural Museum, which usually mounts exhibitions based on long-term research. Thematic exhibition that covered the plastic production of three centuries, from the XIX to the XXI. In little more than a hundred pieces she addressed the notion of vanitas, but in the familiar faces of the characters there are characteristics that go beyond the will of mimesis.

The art of the individual portrait is universally more present in the history of image; however, there has been no continuous evolution of the subject. Faced with a set of portraits, the viewer tends to value the most famous identities, features, gestures and details associated with the personality of the portrayed, which favors forgetting unknown faces.

The exhibition focuses on the portrait as a means of representing a series of attributes on topics such as: homeland, the ethnic composition of a multicultural nation or the materialization of the character of iconic personas. These are gathered in pieces from private and institutional collections that give an account of the panorama of sculpture collecting in Mexico, based on this museographic project.
