Abstract
The Casa Grande Foundation – Memorial Human Kariri is located in the city of Nova Olinda, in the interior of the state of Ceará, in Brazil. As an initiative conceived by the local community, it brings forth memories and identities of the territory, which has vaguely been enunciated previously. In a dialogical way, the Foundation enhances local knowledge by valuing cultural references rooted in the memory and life experience of the people. However, by proposing reflections on Cariri's cultural heritage, it innovates by placing children and young people as protagonists of space management. Currently, the Casa Grande Foundation is an important vector of education and of income generation. This article aims to highlight the importance of local communities as protagonists of cultural heritage and regional development, especially the role of children and adolescents as direct producers of culture. Therefore, this paper begins by presenting the importance of the Cariri territory and the origin of the Casa Grande Foundation. Then, the Foundation as an educational place and its potential for economic transformation in the Cariri region is analyzed. Finally, the voice of some children is shown by introducing the results of an educational action developed for the international project Reconnecting with your Culture. The paper intends to contribute to the comprehension of the democratization of cultural heritage from institutions, projects and actions that consider the existing social dynamics in the territories as the basis of regional development.
