The Baroque: Symbol and Kingdom. Exhibition Museum of Guadalupe, Zacatecas.

Abstract

The Museum of Guadalupe in Zacatecas and former headquarters of the Colegio de Propaganda fide de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe presents the exhibition Symbol and Reign, in which it is intended to show through pictorial works the legacies of the viceregal world with the aim of investigating those elements that articulate the thought and devotion of New Spain. In just over 70 pieces from New Spain, the curators Francesca Conti, Erandi Rubio and Hector Palhares address five thematic cores in which the symbol is understood as an expressive form and an aesthetic category that represents the values and concepts of the time.

In the Viceregal era, one of the richest ethnic, religious and cultural miscegenations in the history of the West took place. This syncretism that was born from this harmonization of indigenous, European, Asian and African cultures, is represented mostly in caste paintings where they manage to express all the symbolism of this cultural combination. In addition to symbolism closely linked to the scholastic vision of the time.
