ICOMOS International Charter on Cultural Heritage Tourism (2022): Strengthening the protection of cultural heritage and the resilience of communities through responsible and sustainable tourism management.

Abstract

The tremendous growth, profound disruption and disruption of global tourism, including cultural heritage tourism, has necessitated the revision of the ICOMOS International Cultural Tourism Charter, 1999, which has been renamed the "ICOMOS International Charter on Cultural Heritage Tourism (2022): Strengthening the protection of cultural heritage and the resilience of communities through responsible and sustainable tourism management". This charter recognizes heritage as a resource of a collective nature, and assumes that the enjoyment and governance of these assets is a socially shared right and duty. It addresses the growing concern about the degradation of cultural heritage and the social, ethical, cultural, environmental and economic rights issues associated with mass tourism, and aims to align the work of stakeholders with the search for positive transformative change, offering principles for regenerative tourism management in destinations, conscious of heritage values, as well as the vulnerability and potential of their living resources.
