PART III focuses on the revitalization of cities through participatory urban planning, following the chronological order of its chapters:
Chapter 14 points out that health is an essential component of urban well-being, but it is severely affected in “forgotten cities” due to the lack of adequate health infrastructure, which directly impacts quality of life. Chapter 15 establishes that public space is essential for urban quality. It proposes a methodology for the systemic evaluation of public space to measure its performance and adaptive capacity. Chapter 16 describes a strategy to promote active mobility in the Historic Center of Oaxaca. This model, focused on pedestrianization and public bicycles, was developed through an inclusive co-creation process, emphasizing equitable access to public space.
Continuing, Chapter 17 reinforces that the deterioration of public spaces generates inequalities and that social participation is the engine of regeneration, empowering communities in design. Chapter 18 proposes a methodological tool to evaluate urban resilience from a critical perspective, understanding it as a collective and political process. This study identifies five key dimensions of resilience (social, governance, physical, environmental, and economic). Chapter 19 presents the application of the Mastermind methodology for regenerating cities as applied in Colombia. This experience demonstrated that collective intelligence can integrate participatory urbanism and social innovation to create sustainable developments.
Chapter 20 addresses the fact that climate change requires strengthening the technical institutional capacity of municipalities. The “Green Sidewalks” program is proposed as an innovative and participatory solution to mitigate this challenge. Chapter 21 emphasizes that participation must be a methodological and empathetic tool to achieve real results, rather than just a requirement. Chapter 22 analyzes the real estate market, concluding that private policies generate a de facto land market that results in discrimination by excluding neighborhoods.
Chapter 23 confirms that the provision of public spaces in optimal conditions has a decisive impact on Urban Quality of Life.
Urban revitalization requires a comprehensive approach that addresses health, infrastructure, resilience, and climate and market challenges, always with Participatory Urbanism as a pillar.
