Abstract
Neuroaesthetics, Emotional Dissonance, and Well-being: A Gender-focused Interdisciplinary Study of Five ArtworksMaría
Helena González López
The aim of this article is to explore how emotional dissonance can lead to subjective transformation and well-being during the contemplation of artworks approached from a gender perspective. This inquiry is grounded in museum audience studies, which show that although most visitors seek pleasurable experiences, many artworks provoke complex responses—especially those that deal with the unpleasant or uncomfortable. The article examines how such experiences can emotionally and cognitively enrich the viewer.
The theoretical framework integrates contributions from neuroaesthetics, highlighting studies that demonstrate how even unpleasant experiences can activate brain regions associated with reward, provided the stimulus is cognitively stimulating or meaningful. Five artworks are analyzed from an interdisciplinary perspective, illustrating how their perception prompts critical thinking, metacognition, and ethical reflection, thereby contributing to both hedonic and eudaimonic well being.
Keywords: neuroaesthetics; emotional dissonance; well-being; gender perspective; art museums.
