Past and Present of the Cultural Heritage of the Historic Ports of the Yucatán Peninsula: The Cases of Campeche, Sisal, and Progreso.

Abstract

This article focuses primarily on the areas of urban planning and heritage architecture and argues that, to understand the urban-architectural heritage of the historic ports of Mexico studied, it is necessary to understand both their geographical and socioeconomic characteristics, from their origins to the present day, which gave rise to the formation of the existing cultural heritage and the problems it faces. Linked to a natural marine environment, the actions of society have also impacted it, which, in some cases, is already considered protected heritage. While some historical antecedents are mentioned, the analysis of urban-architectural transformations is more focused on the period from economic liberalism, through Keynesianism, and ending with the current liberalism, which is in full transformation (19th, 20th, and 21st centuries). This historical research employs a mixed methodology, combining documentary and field research. The primary focus of analysis is the influence of economic model shifts on society and, consequently, on its urban-architectural and natural heritage. It examines how and when the most significant changes occur in elements now recognized and protected as heritage, as well as in those that, while considered heritage, do not receive the social or institutional protection or recognition they deserve. The study concludes that, despite their distinct origins and historical developments, Campeche, Sisal, and Progreso share common problems that require resolution.
