The conference entitled “Genius Loci: Where is the spirit of the place?”, held as part of the exhibition Memories and Stories to mark the 50th anniversary of the Faculty of Psychology, is an interdisciplinary exercise involving psychology, architecture, urban planning, and landscape. Participants included Dr. Graciela Mota Botello, architect Alejandro Cabeza Pérez, Dr. Inda Sáenz Romero, and, on behalf of the MEC-EDUPAZ team, young researchers Ángel Jesús Flores Calva, Michael Díaz Rosas, and Kervin Corona Ramírez.

The meeting proposed a collective reflection on the spirit of place (genius loci) as a principle of identity, habitability, and spatial awareness. This was done through the presentation of research results on collective action trends and characteristics of each public space studied during 2013 and 2023. They also applied cognitive complexity matrices to evaluate the spatial experience, from which they showed the relationships between reflexivity, motivation, and affectivity with respect to the architectural resolution and functionality of each space. In 2013, all of these spaces were heritage sites, and in 2023, they were emblematic spaces in Mexico City, such as Ciudad Universitaria, Parque México, and CETRAM de Zaragoza.

Given the research results demonstrating the psychological impact of architectural spaces, the participants highlighted the need to reconfigure public space from the perspective of the right to place, cultural sustainability, and spatial education. It was emphasized that architecture and urban planning cannot be understood solely as separate technical disciplines, but rather as social and symbolic practices where cognition, affectivity, and collective action converge.

Dr. Cabeza addressed the loss of the spirit of the landscape in contemporary urban development and the urgency of recovering the relationship between nature, territory, and culture, while Dr. Mota Botello emphasized how psychological dimensions necessarily converge with spatial designs, which negatively impacts trends in collective action. For this reason, she proposes the need to promote spatial education for better living, related to public space, social cohesion, and the link between people and space.

Overall, the conference presents a comprehensive vision of heritage as the original reference point for public space, as a living stage for collective memory, identity, and shared creativity. The interdisciplinary experience of the Genius Loci project shows that understanding and managing the spirit of a place is an act of cultural, ethical, and spiritual reconstruction of contemporary living.
